02What Assessors Can Actually Observe

Chapters in this part

Assessors cannot see how hard you prepared. They can score only what appears in your choices, structure, language, and response to challenge.

The categories below are an EPSOHQ preparation model. They are not an official EPSO marking grid. Use the criteria named in your notice or invitation whenever they are available.

Five observable results

What assessors can observeStrong evidence in your performanceWarning sign
Task controlEvery requested output is answered in the promised orderInteresting analysis that misses one task
Evidence controlClaims are accurate, qualified, and linked to the dossierOpinions presented as facts; numbers without context
JudgmentA clear choice, explicit criteria, and an honest trade-offA list of options with no decision
DeliveryOwners, dates, safeguards, and a review point"Improve", "monitor", or "communicate" with no specifics
CommunicationDirect opening, short sentences, clear transitions, direct answersLong preambles, slogans, or a memorised script

EPSO's competency framework describes general competencies through observable anchors. For oral work, the most transferable anchors concern selecting what matters, comparing alternatives, taking a practical decision, communicating clearly and concisely, tailoring the message, and responding calmly to obstacles.

Ten-question readiness check

Answer yes or no after a recorded practice case.

  1. Did I state the requested decision in the first minute?
  2. Did I answer every command verb in the assignment?
  3. Could a listener identify my three main findings?
  4. Did every decisive claim have a source or stated assumption?
  5. Did I compare at least two real options using the same criteria?
  6. Did I name the main disadvantage of my recommendation?
  7. Did I specify who acts, by when, and how success is checked?
  8. Did I finish without rushing the recommendation?
  9. Did I answer questions before giving background?
  10. Did I change my view when new evidence genuinely required it?

Any "no" gives you the next training task. Do not average weak mandate control away with strong delivery.
