Data lifecycle: seven stages, not six
Create/collect, classify, store, retrieve, share, archive, delete. The main exam trap is treating archive as a synonym for delete or skipping classify as a separate stage.

The data lifecycle covers every step from when information first enters an organisation to when it is finally removed. You start by creating or collecting data, then you classify it (for example, marking it as confidential or public). After that you store it, retrieve it when needed, share it with authorised people, archive it once it is no longer active, and finally delete it securely. The key contrast is between archive and delete: archiving means moving data to long-term storage where it can still be accessed if required, whereas deletion means destroying it permanently. Many candidates merge classify into store, but classify is a distinct stage that determines access rights and retention rules.
A useful elimination trick is to look for the stage that controls who can see the data: that is classify, not store. If a question lists 'store, retrieve, share, archive, delete' and omits classify, the sequence is incomplete. Another trap is confusing archive with backup: a backup is a copy for recovery, whereas archiving is the intentional move of inactive data. To spot the difference, remember that archived data is still retrievable on request, but deleted data is not. If a scenario mentions 'keeping records for legal reasons but no longer using them', that points to archive, not delete.
To test yourself quickly, run through the seven stages in order using the mnemonic 'CC-SSR-AD': Create/Collect, Classify, Store, Share, Retrieve, Archive, Delete. If you can recite them forward and backward, you will not miss a stage in a multiple-choice question. When you see a list of lifecycle steps, always check whether classify appears before store and whether archive appears before delete.
