At the top of the DigComp scale, you are not just a power user of complex software. The key difference is that the problem itself is poorly defined or entirely new, so you must first figure out what the real issue is before you can even think about a solution. For example, an expert might design a custom algorithm to detect fraud in a novel data stream, whereas an advanced user would simply run a pre-built analytics tool on standard data.
To avoid the common trap of mistaking advanced tool proficiency for this level, ask yourself: 'Is the problem's scope or definition given, or do I have to discover it?' If a question describes a person who uses sophisticated software but follows a clear brief, that is not highly specialised. Another hint: look for phrases like 'undefined', 'novel', 'multi-factor', or 'frontier' in the scenario. If the answer choice mentions 'creating a new method' rather than 'applying an existing one', that points to the top level.
A quick self-test: imagine a colleague says 'I need to solve this, but I don't even know what the real problem is.' That is the highly specialised level in a nutshell. If you can recall that the hallmark is problem definition, not tool mastery, you will avoid the most common misstep.
