21 competences: exact count and area confusion trap

DigComp 3.0 splits digital skills into five areas, each containing a handful of competences. The total is always 21 competences across all areas. A common mistake is to confuse a competence—like 'Managing digital identity'—with its broader area, which is Area 5 'Safety'. The areas stay fixed across editions, but the 21 competences are the granular skills you need to recall by number, not just the area name.

To avoid the trap, memorise the five areas first: Information & Data Literacy, Communication & Collaboration, Digital Content Creation, Safety, and Problem Solving. Then attach the 21 competences to them. A quick elimination trick: if a question lists a skill that sounds like an area, check whether it's actually a competence under that area. For example, 'Collaborating through digital channels' is a competence in Area 2, not the area itself. Another hint: the number 21 is a prime, so it's easy to spot if you accidentally add or subtract one.

Test yourself by naming all five areas and then listing at least four competences under each without peeking. If you can do that, you'll never confuse a competence with its parent area. The exam won't ask you to list all 21, but it will expect you to recognise which competence belongs to which area—so drill that mapping until it's automatic.
