C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) attaches a digital signature to media files that records the chain of creation and editing—think of it as a tamper‑evident label for photos, videos, or audio. Unlike a simple watermark, C2PA metadata is cryptographically bound, so any change to the file breaks the signature. The standard only proves the editing history, not the truthfulness of the content itself.

Second, a valid C2PA signature does not guarantee the scene was real; it only shows that the file hasn’t been altered since the signature was applied.
