DigComp areas: order and the number-swap trap

The five DigComp areas follow a fixed sequence that starts with finding and handling data (Information and data literacy), then moves to interacting with others (Communication and collaboration), followed by making your own digital material (Digital content creation), protecting yourself and devices (Safety), and finally tackling novel challenges (Problem solving). This order is not alphabetical or random; it mirrors a typical workflow from gathering information to solving complex issues. A common exam trick is to present the areas in a different order, such as placing Safety before Digital content creation, or swapping Problem solving with Communication, so you must know the exact sequence by heart.

To avoid falling for the number-swap trap, link each area to a memorable action: think 'Find it' for Information, 'Talk about it' for Communication, 'Make it' for Content, 'Lock it' for Safety, and 'Fix it' for Problem solving. Another elimination trick is to remember that Safety always comes fourth, right after you create content and before you solve problems. If a question lists areas with numbers, check that the number matches the position in the sequence, not just the area name; for instance, 'Area 3' must be Digital content creation, not Safety.

A compact way to test yourself is to recite the first letter of each area in order: I, C, C, S, P. If you can say 'I C C S P' without hesitation, you have the sequence locked. Alternatively, picture a staircase: you start with data (bottom step), then communicate, create, stay safe, and finally solve problems at the top. Practise this mental image until the order feels automatic.
