Pattern recognition means you look across several examples and notice the same structure appearing again and again. For instance, in a spreadsheet you might see that every invoice follows the same layout: customer name, date, item list, total. Instead of treating each invoice as a unique puzzle, you spot the repeating pattern and design a template or formula that works for all of them. The key contrast is that pattern recognition is about extracting a general rule from specific instances, not about memorising the instances themselves. If you find yourself recalling individual cases without seeing the common thread, you are doing simple memorisation, not pattern recognition.
A useful trick is to ask yourself: 'What stays the same across these examples?' If the answer is a sequence of steps or a data layout, you have a pattern. For elimination, watch out for answer options that describe a single case in detail—those are traps because pattern recognition is about the repeat, not the one-off. Another hint: if a question gives you a list of tasks and asks which skill is needed, pattern recognition is the one that lets you create a reusable process, not just solve the immediate problem. For example, sorting a list of names alphabetically is a one-time task, but noticing that you always sort by surname first is pattern recognition.
To test yourself quickly, take any three similar items from your study notes and try to write one rule that covers all of them. If you can, you have used pattern recognition. If not, you are still looking at each item in isolation. That compact check—three items, one rule—is the fastest way to confirm you understand the concept.
