At lower levels, you follow step-by-step instructions for straightforward tasks. At higher levels, you define the problem yourself, choose the method, and evaluate the outcome with minimal or no supervision. For example, a Level 1 user might be told to 'sort this spreadsheet by date,' while a Level 6 user must decide which data to collect, how to analyse it, and whether the results are trustworthy.
A common trap is mistaking a difficult but well-defined task for a high-proficiency one. If the question gives you clear steps or a single correct answer, it's likely Level 2 or 3, even if the content is advanced. To spot the real level, look for clues about who sets the goal: if the task says 'you are asked to' or 'follow the procedure,' it's low autonomy. If it says 'you identify the need' or 'you evaluate the outcome,' it's high. Also, check for cognitive verbs: 'remember' and 'apply' are lower; 'evaluate' and 'create' are higher.
To test yourself quickly, ask: 'Would a competent colleague need to check my work or give me the next step?' If yes, it's low autonomy. If you'd be the one checking theirs, it's high. This single question separates routine difficulty from genuine proficiency in most exam scenarios.
