E-waste: recycling ≠ data destruction

E-waste covers anything with a plug or battery that you throw away: old phones, laptops, printers, cables, even a broken toaster. The key distinction is that recycling recovers materials like copper or gold, but it does not automatically erase your personal data. A recycled hard drive can still leak sensitive information if it hasn't been securely wiped first. So when you see a question about e-waste, pause and ask: is the focus on environmental harm or on data privacy? The answer changes which rule applies.
A useful trick: link the word 'wipe' to both cleaning a whiteboard and wiping a drive. If a scenario mentions donating or recycling old office kit, mentally add 'and wipe it first'. Another hint: the EU's WEEE Directive targets recycling rates, while GDPR targets data erasure. They are separate legal duties. If an exam option says 'recycling solves the data problem', that is a trap. Instead, think 'recycle the materials, destroy the data separately'.
To test yourself quickly, imagine a drawer of old USB sticks. Your first thought should be 'shred or degauss them, not just bin them'. That single mental image—destroy before discard—covers both the environmental and the privacy angle. If you can recall that, you have the core of e-waste handling nailed.
