The cloud is not a magical, weightless space—it is someone else's physical infrastructure. Every email you store, every video you stream, and every file you back up lives on a server in a data centre that needs constant electricity to run and cooling to prevent overheating. Networks that shuttle your data between devices also consume power, and your own device uses energy to connect. The concrete contrast is simple: local storage uses your device's battery; cloud storage uses that plus the entire chain of remote servers, transmission lines, and cooling fans.

To spot a trick question, watch for phrasing like 'cloud computing is carbon-neutral' or 'the cloud uses no energy because it is virtual.' Neither is true—virtualisation reduces waste but does not eliminate energy use. A useful elimination move: if an option says the cloud has zero environmental impact, it is wrong. Another hint: remember that data centres account for roughly 1% of global electricity demand, so any answer claiming they are negligible is suspect. When comparing cloud vs local, think about the full chain: device + network + data centre + cooling.

A compact way to test yourself: picture a single email. It sits on a server that is always on, in a room that is always cooled, connected by cables that are always powered. That email's energy cost is not zero just because you cannot see the hardware. If a question offers 'no physical resources used' as a benefit of the cloud, you know it is a distractor.
