This distinction matters because metadata can reveal far more than the file's surface content, especially in exam scenarios where you must decide what information is safe to share.
To spot metadata traps in questions, remember that metadata is often invisible to the casual user but can be stripped using tools like 'Remove Properties and Personal Information' in Windows or 'ExifTool' for images. A common trick is to check whether a question asks about 'file properties' or 'document information' – those are synonyms for metadata. Also, be aware that metadata can include revision history or comments in a Word document, which might leak confidential edits even if the visible text is sanitised.
A quick way to test your understanding: imagine you receive a harmless-looking PDF from a colleague. Before forwarding it, ask yourself what hidden metadata could be inside – perhaps the author's name, the organisation, or the time it was last saved. If the exam asks about 'data leakage', metadata is often the culprit, not the file content itself.
