Exam-ready principles
- •Colour contrast: Ensure meaningful text and interface elements remain distinguishable at the required contrast level.
- •Colour independence: Never use colour as the only carrier of status or category; add labels, patterns or symbols.
- •Alternative text: Describe the information or function conveyed by an image, not every decorative detail.
- •Reading order: Structure documents and visual assets so assistive technology follows the intended logical sequence.
- •Inclusive representation: Avoid stereotypes and select people, contexts and symbols that reflect audience diversity.
- •Chart selection: Match form to task: bars compare values, lines show change, and maps show meaningful geography.
- •Data integrity: Begin chart axes and scales in ways that do not exaggerate differences or conceal relevant variation.
- •Direct labelling: Place clear labels near data where possible to reduce legend lookup and interpretation burden.
- •Annotation: Highlight the decision-relevant pattern while keeping source, unit, period and uncertainty visible.
