The Traineeship Programme is mainly targeted to young university graduates, without excluding those who, in the framework of lifelong learning, have recently obtained a university degree and are at the beginning of a new professional career. Who can apply: Nationals of a Member State of the European Union who are 18 years of age or older. Applicants must have a level of education which corresponds to completed university studies attested by a diploma (awarded in EU Member States or that are subject to the equivalence certificates issued by Member States’ Authorities), when the normal period of university education is three years or more. Applicants must not have already benefited or benefit from any kind of traineeship within a European Union institution or body or Have had or have any kind of employment within a European Union institution or body. Duration: 6 months Paid: Yes. 600€ (Monthly Grant) and 350€ (Accommodation Allowance). Starting Dates: 1st September or 1st March.

ECB's traineeship programme

The ECB's traineeship programme offers you the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge you acquired during your studies and get a better understanding of what working for Europe entails. As a trainee you will gain an insight into the ECB’s activities and contribute to the ECB’s mission. The tasks performed by you as a trainee are supervised and vary according to the unit you join. Some examples include research, drawing up draft reports, compiling statistical data, performing operational tasks and participating in ad hoc studies.

Who can apply: Nationals of a Member State of the EU or of an acceding country who have completed at least a first cycle qualification (bachelor’s degree)

Duration: 3-6 months (can be prolonged once up to a total of 12 months)

Paid: Yes. Around 1,050€ per month

Traineeships - EO

The European Ombudsman offers traineeships to university or higher education graduates with a keen interest in European Union public administration and, in particular, in how the EU administration relates to citizens.

The traineeships are intended to provide recent graduates with practical experience of the work of the European Ombudsman and to enable them to build on the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies. The tasks of trainees, depending on the stream of the particular traineeship will include assisting in the investigation of complaints, assisting in the area of media and communications, work on IT projects or on research relevant to the work of the Ombudsman. Trainees work under the direct supervision of an official or agent of the European Ombudsman, normally a Head of Unit or equivalent.

Who can apply: Nationals of a Member State of the EU, or of a candidate country for accession to the EU, with a degree or diploma of at least 3 years in one of the disciplines foreseen in the traineeship notice.

Duration: 1 year maximum (depending on performance).

Paid: Yes. Around 1.300€ per month in Brussels and around 1.600€ per month in Strasbourg.

Starting Dates: 1 January and 1 September.

European Data Protection Supervisor

The EDPS offers recent university graduates the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge acquired during their studies, particularly in their specific areas of competence. Traineeships allow trainees to acquire practical experience of the EDPS’ day-to-day activities as well as in data protection.

Who can apply: Nationals of a Member State of the EU who have completed the first cycle of the higher education course (three years of university education) and obtained a full degree or its equivalent

Duration: 5 months

Paid: Yes. Around 950€ per month

Starting Dates: 1 March and 1 October

Traineeships - EEAS

The EU has a long tradition of offering traineeship opportunities in EU Delegations around the world. Traineeships are essentially established for the benefit of students and young graduates. It is an educational project that does not foresee any contractual or employment relationship with the Delegation.

Who can apply: Depending on a specific pillar, traineeships in EU Delegations are open to EU citizens, citizens from candidate countries that have concluded EU accession negotiations and nationals of the host country. For paid traineeships, applicants must have graduated from a university or equivalent higher-education establishment with at least a Bachelor's level; for unpaid compulsory traineeships, applicants shall be 3rd , 4th or 5th year students of a University or another higher-education establishment. Candidates must have the capacity to speak in the working language of the EU Delegation, knowledge of the official language of the host country would be an asset.

Duration: Maximum 6 months

Paid: for young graduates with less than one year of professional experience. Unpaid compulsory traineeship: for students already residing and studying in the host country.

Short-term traineeships - EESC

Paid traineeships for short periods are occasionally available for university students.

Who can apply: University students for whom such a traineeship is compulsory for the completion of their studies

Duration: 1, 2, or 3 months

Paid: Yes, around 770 € per month

Starting Dates: 1st or 16th of a given month, except in July and August.

Long-term traineeships - EESC

Twice a year the European Economic and Social Committee offers traineeships to university graduates. These periods of in-service training offer an opportunity to learn about the EESC's roles and activities and to acquire professional experience in a multicultural environment.

Who can apply: University graduates who are nationals of the Member States of the European Union.

Paid: Yes, around 1,540 € per month

Starting Dates: 16 February and 16 September

Traineeships - Court of Auditors

The European Court of Auditors organises two traineeship sessions per year in areas of interest to its work.

Who can apply: EU nationals who either hold a recognised university-level diploma or who have completed at least four semesters of university study in an area of interest to the Court (Audit, Budget, Accounting, Administration, Human Resources, Translation, Communication, International Relations, Legal).

Duration: between 3 and 6 months.

Paid: 1 600 euros/month.

Starting Dates: 1 April and 1 October, every year.

Inclusive Traineeship Program - Court of Justice of the European Union

The Court supports equal opportunities and equal treatment of candidates. It actively encourages candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds to apply for a traineeship if they fulfil the eligibility criteria.

The Court has a specific program to ensure access to traineeships for persons with disabilities. This programme offers 2 traineeships per traineeship period.

These traineeships take place either in the Members’ Chambers or in the administrative services.

Duration: 5 months.

Paid: Yes. Trainees in this program receive 150% of the grant paid to trainees from the general program (and of the one-time travel allowance) normally awarded to trainees. This grant is not subject to the tax regime applicable to EU officials and other agents.

Starting Dates:

1st of March to 31st of July (applications to be made between July and September of the previous year)

1st of October to the end of February (applications to be made between February and April of each year)

Traineeships - Court of Justice of the European Union

Every year, the Court of Justice of the European Union offers a limited number of paid traineeships in the chambers of Members of the Court of Justice and the General Court of the European Union and in the administrative departments of the Court.

Traineeships at the Court of Justice of the European Union are offered across a wide range of administrative and support services. These include directorates responsible for human resources, budget and financial affairs, buildings and security, multilingualism (legal translation and interpretation), library services, research and documentation, communication, protocol and visits, and information technology, as well as units such as projects and terminological coordination. Opportunities are also available within the office of the Legal Adviser on Administrative Matters and the registries of both the Court of Justice and the General Court.

Who can apply: EU nationals who have obtained a three-year bachelor's degree in any subject.

For the traineeships undertaken in the chambers of Judges or Advocates Generals and for certain services, a diploma in law, political sciences, (economics or an associated field is required.

Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of one official language of the European Union and a good knowledge of another official language. In view of the nature of the working environment, a good knowledge of French or English is necessary.

Also, applicants must have not already held a post or undertaken a traineeship – either paid or unpaid – lasting more than six weeks in an EU institution or body

Paid: Yes. Trainees receive a grant of approximately €2 400 per month (equivalent to 75% of the minimum social wage for a skilled worker in Luxembourg). This grant is not subject to the tax regime applicable to EU officials and other agents.

Under certain conditions, trainees will receive a one-time travel allowance, currently set at €150.

Interpreting Traineeships - Court of Justice of the European Union

Interpreting traineeships are primarily aimed at newly qualified conference interpreters whose language combination is of interest to the Interpretation Directorate. The aim is to enable newly qualified interpreters to be supervised as they perfect their interpreting skills, particularly in legal interpreting, which involves the preparation of case-files, terminological research and practical exercises in a ‘silent booth'.

Who can apply: Newly qualified EU nationals conference interpreters with a diploma in conference interpreting.

Applicants must have at least two passive EU languages or a second active EU language. Applicants must also be able to read French.

Duration: 10-12 weeks (applications to be made once a year between July and September).

Paid: Yes. The same as the general program.

Traineeships - ETF

The objectives of the internships are to provide trainees with work experience in the administration of co-operation in the field of education and training, to gain an insight of the ETF' objectives and activities and to allow them to put their learning into practice.

Who can apply: Citizens of both the EU Member States and the ETF' partner countries.

Duration: 6 months

Paid: Yes

EASA Graduate Traineeship Programme (GTP)

The Agency offers opportunities in all areas of the organisation both for recent graduates and university students. These opportunities aim to give an understanding of the Agency and its role within the activities of the European Union.

Who can apply: Nationals of one of the EASA Member States or of a country with observer status in the EASA Management Board whose background is relevant to the activities of the Agency

Duration: 12 months

Paid: Yes.

Traineeships - ENISA

Through its traineeship scheme, ENISA benefits from the input of university graduates without excluding those who – in the framework of lifelong learning – have recently obtained a university diploma or are at the beginning of a new professional career.

Who can apply: Nationals of the Member States of the European Union or the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), unless an exception is authorized by the appointing authority, who have completed a university-level education of at least 3 years and obtained a full bachelor’s degree or its equivalent by the closing date for applications and enjoy their full rights as citizens.

Duration: 6-12 months

Paid: Yes. Around 1,500€ per month

FRONTEX
